Making Disciples is a process that does not happen over night or with the initial decision to give your life to Christ. I think sometimes we think because we’ve said the words “I give my life to Christ” that osmosis takes place and poof we can now go make disciples and tell everyone to about what Jesus has done, but how can you know what Christ has done for you when you only know of him, you don’t truly know him yet? Many times Christians will bypass being a disciple and the learning process and try to jump right into a leading role. This is a tactic of the enemy.
Think about this. You have been at a job for 20 years and today your boss hires someone new and they start at an entry level position. You sit down at lunchtime the new hire starts telling you how great they are at the job and what you can do to be better.
Are your eyebrows doing the same thing mine are? I would look at that individual and probably think “who do you think you are?” Or “who are you to tell me?” – Let’s be real it sounds absurd.
But that’s what many Christians do. They bypass the training part of their new job or identity. They skip being discipled or can I say it this way, they bypass being disciplined.
A disciple is a disciplined one. It is learning how to eliminate fleshly desires, temptations, offenses, etc. by allowing the Spirit of the Living God to override your humanity.
Why did Jesus come to earth?
To show us how to do it!! Now it took him 30 years to come into the place of having disciples; notice the disciples followed him everyday, they walked, talked, & observed Jesus. It wasn’t until Jesus (their leadership) said for them to lay hands or baptize that they did. They were in full-on student mode until released by Jesus to go and make their own disciples.
But many in the body of Christ have this wall of pride that has them feel like they can skip this part. Well I’m here to tell you loudly, that plain and simple you can’t.
We as the church has dropped the ball and it’s time to pick it back up.
In John 21 Jesus asks Peter 3 times “Do you love me?” And then tell Peter “Feed my sheep.” There was a desperation in Jesus to make sure that before he left his earthly body that his sheep were fed.
As his sheep we have to be fed, we have to grow and grow up. After a certain maturity level has grown inside of the baby Christian THEN the baton is passed and it becomes our responsibility and purpose, to lead others. It’s actually our only purpose here on earth, the question is do you Believe that? Or are you so consumed with your earthly desires that you forget the great commission?
We are called to make disciples. To me it means holding someone’s hand while you’re still holding someone’s hand. As someone that leads others, I know I need to be taught, i want to continue to learn and (here’s the hard part) I want to be corrected!! That is a true statement. I don’t want to be who I am today next year or even next week. I want to be corrected and if my ears aren’t fine tuned to hear the Holy Spirits correction then I am willing and want to be corrected by a human being that the Lord has put over my life, to keep me on the path of righteousness.
Are you willing to be a disciple? Are you willing to literally put down your opinions for the kingdom of God? To keep your mouth shut, or maybe it’s to open your mouth in boldness, to love the one that annoys the living daylights out of you, the one you can’t stand? Are you willing to recognize you have pride so it can come down so you can share what God has done in your life. Are you willing to share your messy life and messy emotions with people to show them how to be an overcomer because that’s what he’s done for you??? Come on. Think about it?
I Corinthians 4:8 TPT
Though we experience every kind of pressure, we’re not crushed. At times we don’t know what to do, but quitting is not an option. 9We are persecuted by others, but God has not forsaken us. We may be knocked down, but not out. 10We continually share in the death of Jesus in our own bodies so that the resurrection life of Jesus will be revealed through our humanity. 11We consider living to mean that we are constantly being handed over to death for Jesus’ sake so that the life of Jesus will be revealed through our humanity. 12So, then, death is at work in us but it releases life in you.
